I specialise in counselling for men. I have worked as a counsellor and mental health practitioner for the past two years in correctional and community settings with men who have experiences ranging from harmful substance use and co-occurring mental ill-health, to traumatic stress, justice involvement, and homelessness. I continue this work three days per week with a non-governmental organization, and currently am offering appointments on Saturdays between 10am and 2pm.
Why see me?
Because I believe that, just like me and everyone I know, occasionally life can feel like it has derailed you, and this can lead to getting stuck in a rut, and, to put it bluntly, this “stuckness” sucks. A hundred years of science in counselling has demonstrated that it is possible to get unstuck, get back on track, and get moving again, in a direction that matters to you. I will help to facilitate this through the use of evidence-based approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Education & Research
I completed a PhD in psychology at Deakin University in 2008 and then worked at the University of Queensland, the University of Melbourne, and the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, on a project that measured the health of the world. Unsurprisingly, mental ill-health was a leading cause of health loss in almost every country.
After 8 years of working with politicians and policymakers around the world, including in Southeast Asia and the Pacific, Africa and South America, I decided to volunteer in a Seattle prison to facilitate a present-moment awareness group. It was this experience, in combination with my research that highlighted the significant health loss due to mental ill-health, that led to a decision to come back to Australia to develop my clinical skills.
I completed a Master of Social Work degree in 2018 and am a full member of the Australian Association of Social Workers. I abide by their code of ethics. I continue to undergo additional training and professional development in counselling theory and science as part of my commitment to providing the highest quality evidence-based service.
