Clinical Supervision with Julian McNally
Expert Clinical Supervision for Psychologists
Are you a registered psychologist or provisional psychologist seeking insightful and supportive clinical supervision that aligns with your professional development needs and registration requirements?
With 30 years of experience as a practicing psychologist in Australia and over 25 years providing clinical supervision (approximately 3000 hours of direct one-on-one supervision), I offer a depth of knowledge and a flexible, evidence-based approach to help you flourish in your professional journey.
I am a board-registered psychologist with endorsement in the Counselling Psychology Area of Practice with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA). I provide supervision to provisional psychologists (including 5+1 pathway registrars), general registered psychologists, and registrars pursuing endorsement in Counselling Psychology as well as being a secondary supervisor for Clinical Psychology registrars. My experience also extends to supervising allied health professionals, including psychiatry registrars, mental health social workers and nurses and occupational therapists.
My Supervision Philosophy
My primary theoretical orientation is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an evidence-based approach that resonates with many practitioners. This framework informs my supervision style, emphasizing a collaborative learning environment built on curiosity, humility, and a shared understanding of the challenges and rewards of clinical practice. I believe we are all “in the same boat,” client, practitioner and supervisor. One thing I really like about the ACT approach is not only does it help clients live a more fulfilling life, it helps practitioners deal with the challenges of our work.
While ACT is my core framework, my approach is enriched by training in several other therapeutic modalities, including Solution-Oriented Counselling, Narrative Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. This allows for a nuanced and integrative approach tailored to your specific cases and professional development goals.
Supporting Your Professional Growth Across Diverse Areas
My expertise lies in the therapeutic process itself, enabling me to effectively supervise psychologists working with a wide range of presenting issues and client populations. I have particular experience with anxiety and mood disorders, compulsions, addictions, relationship and life stage issues, forensic populations, and members of the adoption triangle. However my focus on core therapeutic skills allows me to contribute meaningfully to your development even in specialist areas. For example, I have successfully supported psychologists specializing in child and adolescent psychology and eating disorders although rarely work with those populations.
Flexible and Collaborative Supervision Structure
I understand that you have unique learning and development needs, tied to PsyBA requirements and your career aspirations. Therefore, the structure of our supervision sessions is highly flexible and negotiated collaboratively. Whether you require in-depth case conceptualization, guidance on navigating complex ethical dilemmas and professional standards specific to Australia, or support in meeting your AHPRA registration requirements, our sessions will focus on your specific needs.
Meaningful and Developmental Feedback
I believe that constructive feedback is essential for professional growth and meeting professional standards. I am committed to open communication in both directions. I provide feedback that you will find clear and actionable. With less experienced practitioners, I focus on encouragement, highlighting strengths, and acknowledging progress. As our working relationship develops, I offer more direct feedback and pose challenging questions to encourage deeper reflection and critical thinking about your practice. Creating a safe, respectful, and supportive space where your perspectives are valued is paramount.
Practical Information
My fee for a 60-minute individual supervision session is $200 (including GST), aligning with typical rates for experienced supervisors in Australia. Supervision is available both in person and via Google Meet, phone and telehealth platforms.
